  1. This grading explains one important feature of Alzheimer's disease, namely the formation of senile plaques: they appear precisely with the arrival of tau pathology in a given area. Senile plaques are in fact a marker of recently affected brain areas by tau pathology. Note to the reader: Brodmann area 17 is the last neocortical region affected in AD (stage 10 of tau pathology; Braak stage VI). This grading fits well with the mechanisms of spreading of the neurodegenerative process. It does not explain if the initial process of neurodegeneration (tau pathology in the entorhinal cortex during stages 1 and 2) is observed prior or simultaneously to amyloid deposits.
