This week, a study previously reported in our Conference News appeared in JBC. First author Inna Khlistunova and colleagues working with Eva-Maria and Eckhard Mandelkow at the Max-Planck Institute in Hamburg, Germany, describe a new cell-based system that allows them to orchestrate and observe aggregation of different forms of tau protein, correlate aggregation with toxicity, and then dissolve the aggregates or prevent their formation with drugs. Read Tom Fagan’s story from Dublin for a broader news update of tau, and download the manuscript while it is still freely available from JBC.—Gabrielle Strobel
