I am a specialist in the genetics of neurodegenerative disorders focusing on Parkinsonism and related disorders. I have worked on the genetics of ageing and neurodegenerative disorders for over 10 years (>250 publications). The main goal of my research is the identification of genes and those specific variants that drive susceptibility to Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. During the last five years, as part of Mayo Clinic Florida Udall Center I was involved in the identification of pathogenic mutations in the VPS35 gene in Parkinson’s disease and mutations in CSF1R for hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids. My studies have helped to characterize the role of LRRK2 variants in PD risk identifying novel risk variants and a common protective haplotype. The identification of novel genes and variants for parkinsonism not only provides a clinical diagnostic tool but also generates molecular biological tools, the development of relevant in vitro and in vivo model systems and directs targeted therapeutic development.
