Bio

Professor Chan King-ming (陳竟明) graduated from the Department of Biology (minor in Geography), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), with his B.Sc. (1982), and M. Phil. (1984). He obtained his Ph.D. degree (1991) from Memorial University of Newfoundland at St. John’s in Canada. Before joining CUHK, he worked at Queen’s University (Kingston, Canada) and Center of Marine Biotechnology (Baltimore, USA).

Professor Chan joined the Department of Biochemistry, CUHK, as Lecturer in 1992 and he is now an Associate Professor in the School of Life Sciences and Director of the Environmental Science Program. He involves in teaching of a general education course entitled Environmental Problems in Hong Kong and several courses in the Programs of Biochemistry and Environmental Science, including Biochemical Toxicology, Introduction to Environmental Science, Molecular Endocrinology and a few master program courses. His research interests cover aquatic toxicology, environmental policy, marine biotechnology, molecular endocrinology and synthetic biology. He has published two book chapters and 62 full papers in peer-review journals. He is Warden of Hostel 2 (since 98), Fellow at Shaw College (1996-2016), and elected member of Shaw College Board of Trustees (2010-2013). He was Chairman of University Steering Committee on Environment of CUHK from 2000-2004. Prof. Chan has recently been elected as Chairman of the Chinese University Teacher’s Association (CUTA) since 2011.

Professor Chan is member of many professional societies, including American Fisheries Society, Society of Toxicology (USA), Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (USA), The American Physiological Society, and the Hong Kong Marine Biological Association. Prof. Chan is also an elected member (2002-2007, 2007-2009, 2011-15) of Election Committee (Higher Education Sub-Sector) of HKSAR government. He was appointed as Part-time member of Central Policy Unit, HKSAR Government (2004 to 2006) for three years and is now also advisor of several local green groups, including Green Community, Foot Print, Eco-Education and Resource Centre, etc. Prof. Chan was founding member of the Democratic Party since 1994, and became vice-chairman in 2005-2006, he later left and formed Neo Democrats in 2011, aiming to shrive for better livelihood, a sustainable environment, and fight for democracy and universal suffrage in Hong Kong.
