The National Institute on Aging (NIA) Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking applications from highly motivated individuals for the position of Tenure-Track Investigator 1 in the Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD).
CARD is a collaborative initiative between the NIA and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) that supports basic, translational, and clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease related dementias (AD/ADRD) including AD, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, and vascular dementia. CARD’s central mission is to initiate, stimulate, accelerate, and support research that will lead to the development of improved treatment and prevention for these diseases. The new center, which features a state-of-the-art facility and cutting-edge technology, serves as a collaborative hub for research in the AD/ADRD space, leveraging the highly collaborative and collegial nature of the Intramural Research Program.
The successful candidate will develop an independent research program focused on one or both of two research areas detailed below, each directed toward an understanding of AD/ADRD.
Thematic area one: Modern molecular neuropathologic research that aims to investigate the basis of AD/ADRD using human-derived samples. The successful candidate will launch an independent research program that integrates standard neuropathological approaches with state-of-the-art methods, such as digital neuropathology, and artificial intelligence-based classification, to characterize the molecular basis of neuropathologic human tissue including bulk, single cell, and spatial genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in close collaboration with researchers within and outside of CARD. Requirements for the position include a strong background and extensive experience in neurodegenerative disease research and modern neuropathology. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience in digital pathology, the application of artificial intelligence to pathology and single cell-omics methods, as well as a strong track record of collaborative research.
Thematic area two: Translational research that aims to use functional genetics and/or genomics to translate knowledge of the genetic architecture of AD/ADRD to a biological understanding of disease processes. The successful candidate will launch an independent research program to determine the cellular context(s), risk alleles, effector genes, and mechanisms linked to known and to-be-discovered genetic risk loci for AD/ADRD. The position requires a strong background and extensive experience in neurogenetics, high-content genomics, and data science. There are growing genomic data resources from relevant individuals within CARD and the broader IRP and tissues for AD/ADRD including those aimed at revealing chromatin accessibility, chromatin organization, epigenetic marks, and transcriptional activity from brain, and single-cell populations. This rich unique resource will provide the opportunity to develop an independent research program. The successful applicant will also play a major role in expanding this resource, particularly in tissues and derived materials from underrepresented populations. The successful candidate will have a strong background and extensive experience in neurogenetics, high-content genomics, and use of iPSC derived cells and/or organoids as model systems. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience in neurodegeneration, single-cell genomics, and with a strong track record of collaborative research.
The position includes an attractive start-up package and operating budget, including access to comprehensive NIA core facilities and to the unique and extensive resources of the NIH. Significant support will be available within CARD to enable data generation, discovery, analysis and collaboration.

The candidate’s capabilities must be demonstrated through publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals in the relevant field(s). The incumbent is expected to demonstrate peer recognition of their specific contributions to these publications.
