The science program manager for knowledge environments will drive the development and adoption of new tools and technologies for biomedical research, with an emphasis on research informatics, knowledge dissemination, and discovery. Current work is focused on Chan Zuckerberg Meta, a free research tool that creates personalized, predictive paper feeds by deploying machine learning and natural language processing to read, curate and prioritize the scientific literature. CZI also employs grantmaking and research partnerships to stimulate new approaches to data sharing, informatics, and knowledge management.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the ways that biomedical scientists interact with research tools to advance discoveries. The science program manager will help develop a vision and strategy for CZI’s approach to informatics and knowledge environments and work closely with internal collaborators on the Meta team, and with CZI's partners in the scientific community, to develop, improve, and disseminate research tools to scientists across institutions and career stages.


  • Work with science program officers, computational biologists, software engineers, product, and UX researchers at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to help develop and improve research tools related to data management, informatics and publishing tools including Meta and others. Examples:
    • Create and test models for integrating expert human curation with automated machine learning capabilities of Meta to generate high-value research insights for scientists.
    • Identify new opportunities and potential partners for using the Meta knowledge graph and other forms of knowledge to accelerate biomedical science.
    • Work creatively to connect members of the engineering, product, and UX teams with engaged external scientific partners to build new tools.
  • Serve as a liaison for the greater external scientific community to encourage and disseminate CZI-supported tools.
  • Communicate a scientific vision, create interdisciplinary communities, mentor participating scientists, and manage their relationships and possible conflicts. 
  • Support grantmaking and build relationships with our existing partners such as bioRxiv (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory) and, and with future grantees.
  • Build relationships with other groups in this area—including federal and international supporters of knowledge sharing, foundations, and the private sector—to share best practices, eliminate redundancy, and promote interoperability.
  • Develop and implement data-driven criteria for choosing and evaluating projects and programs/



  • Understanding of how biomedical researchers, in particular in academic settings, think and work.
  • Familiarity with curation and discovery of the scientific literature; data management, sharing and curation; analysis and visualization tools; publishing and other forms of scholarly communication.
  • Ability to learn on the fly and develop an understanding of a new field fairly rapidly. The right person will be able to transfer his or her skills across topics and fields.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and work with scientists at different levels.
  • Creativity and flexibility, outstanding problem-solving skills, and ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic start-up environment.


  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent experience in some area of biology, ideally aligned with CZI’s current areas of focus around genomics, quantitative biology, systems biology, cell biology.
  • Expertise in biocuration, annotation, knowledge management or other area of research informatics. Understanding the range of available biomedical databases, informatics research tools and software, in particular from a users perspective.
  • Expertise in product strategy, development, or UX helpful to the role, but not required.
  • Five+ years of scientific management experience in a position such as staff scientist, principal investigator of a scientific research laboratory, or in another area of scientific practice such as government, publishing, biotechnology, or a scientific research foundation.
  • Five+ years of experience in physical or virtual community-building activities, such as convening scientists for meetings that promote the exchange of ideas, training.
  • Five+ years of experience in a collaborative role that required a broad and deep understanding of many scientific areas outside of the primary area of interest.
