The project scientist/research physician will work on Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center clinical research studies under the supervision of the institute director and medical director. The primary responsibility will be to perform neurological and physical assessments for research participants at the UCI MIND Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) located in Irvine, California. There are approximately 400 research participants seen in the ADRC, which includes annual neurological/physical and cognitive evaluations. The project scientist/research physician may also perform clinical interviews with study participants and partners, perform cognitive assessments, write up findings in formal reports, and participate in presenting case conferences for weekly clinical research team meetings. He/She may also be involved in the attainment of written informed consent for various human research protocols.
The project scientist/research physician will also serve as the study physician for a large number of clinical trials, working closely with the principal investigator(s). Under the direction of the principal investigator(s), the incumbent will recruit participants including prescreening medical records for inclusion/exclusion criteria, perform psychometric assessments, confirm diagnoses, perform blood draws and lumbar punctures, and prescribe and administer study medications.
The incumbent may infrequently be invited to attend outreach events, and speak to supporting organizations about research and current findings. The project scientist/research physician may also assist in IRB submission and communication, data analysis, and dissemination of research results.
He/She will be expected to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job, and maintain a high level of professionalism and collegiality in interactions with participants, patients, and team members.
- Board certification in family medicine or internal medicine and board eligibility/board certification in geriatric medicine; excellent clinical skills; interest in clinical research; eligibility for UC Irvine Medical Center medical staff privileges; desire to work in an interdisciplinary team.
- Current DEA license.
- Current BCLS (CPR/AED) or ACLS certification.
Ideal candidates will have previous experience in Alzheimer’s disease, and clinical trials, including trials in dementia as well as mild cognitive impairment. Previous experience in human subjects research, including training in research ethics and good clinical practice are preferred. Previous experience with electronic medical records, clinical trials management software, and electronic data capture systems is preferred. Candidates must be able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and to manage projects within a complex organization; therefore, excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are essential. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
