Description

The University of California, Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has an opportunity for a project scientist. The overarching mission of the institute is to understand the causes leading to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, and Huntington’s disease. UCI MIND also houses the UCI Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC). Much of the research carried out by UCI MIND and the ADRC involves the statistical analysis of empirical data. This position will provide support for statistical/biostatistical collaborative research, methodology research, and education to researchers at UCI MIND and the ADRC.

The successful candidate will be responsible for two main functions. The first is to conceptualize, plan, design, develop, and implement statistical programs for data analysis; interpret, summarize, and communicate results in writing and present results in research meetings, consultation, and collaborative research; perform statistical work using a variety of statistical methods, including analysis of variance, linear models, generalized linear models, generalized linear mixed models, categorical data analysis, longitudinal analysis, survival analysis, multivariate analysis, prediction, and missing data imputation, supervised and unsupervised learning; organize, manage and thoroughly document statistical analysis with careful consideration to the standards of reproducibility of research; support design and analysis of research studies; assist in study designs (clinical trials and observational studies), including sample size and power analysis. 

The second is to attend regular meetings and meetings with UCI MIND and ADRC personnel as needed; assist in the day-to-day management of research projects and the Data Management and Statistics Core of the ADRC, including coordination of meetings, project tracking/management and communication/coordination with other UCI MIND and ADRC administrative staff; work collaboratively with MIND and ADRC team members to maintain database and statistical projects and generation of various reports; meet with researchers to provide short-term statistical consultation and longer-term collaboration on research projects and grant submission collaboration; assist with the development of new ideas for statistical analysis methods and implementation software such as SAS and R; provide assistance in the preparation of collaborative research grants, papers, and abstracts and presentations.

Requirements

A successful candidate must have a doctoral degree in statistics and have at least 10 years of work experience. The candidate must also be proficient with frequentist and Bayesian inference, and be able to implement a variety of statistical methods (including, but not limited to, survival analysis, generalized linear models, mixed effects models, and machine learning algorithms) for analysis of laboratory studies, clinical trials, and population-based studies.

Applicants must have advanced writing skills and experience with scientific writing. Candidates must be able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and to manage projects within a complex organization; therefore, excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are essential. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
