A postdoctoral position is open in the laboratory of Gail V.W. Johnson at the University of Rochester Medical Center which focuses on the role of autophagy-lysosome pathway (ALP) in tau clearance and how dysfunction of this pathway may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. Recent publications from our group have provided evidence that the co-chaperone BAG3 is likely one of the key players in tau clearance mechanisms. This NIH-funded research project will utilize mouse models and primary neuron cultures to identify components of the BAG3 complex and how they contribute to the function of BAG3 in facilitating the ALP process and clearance of different tau species.
This lab has a longstanding interesting in the function and metabolism of tau in the context of Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies. In particular, recent studies in the lab have focused on the mechanisms of ALP-mediated tau degradation. This lab has an established history of productivity and making significant contributions to the understanding of tau function and metabolism. This new project builds on strong previous findings demonstrating that BAG3 plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of tau proteostasis and that dysregulation of the BAG3 complex contributes to the accumulation of pathologically relevant tau species. The optimal candidates will have significant experience with mice and/or primary neuron cultures.
This postdoctoral position is available immediately and fully funded for a minimum of three years. Compensation will follow NIH postdoctoral stipend levels and includes benefits.
- A recent Ph.D. in neuroscience, cell biology, or a related field.
- A minimum of one first author publication in a solid peer-reviewed journal indexed on PubMed. Preferably multiple publications.
- Experience with mouse studies preferred, especially quantitative immunohistochemistry using brain sections.
- General experience in molecular biology, pathology and biochemistry.
- The individual should be well-organized, able to multi-task, self-motivated with excellent lab bench skills. Must be able to work independently, as well as part of team, and contribute intellectually to the project.
- The individual’s oral and written English must be excellent.
