A postdoctoral position is available to study prion diseases using primary neuronal cultures, biochemistry techniques, and mouse models.
The Sigurdson lab is investigating how the biochemical properties of prion strains impact prion spread to the brain as well as the molecular basis for prion species barriers. Projects include defining the structural requirements for prion conversion, understanding the mechanisms of prion spread between cells, and assessing selective neuronal vulnerability in prion disease using primary neurons and mouse models. Biochemists interested in learning cell culture techniques and mouse models of disease are encouraged to apply. The team is highly interactive and currently is comprised of 12 members from undergraduate level to more independent research scientists. Additional information can be found at http://sigurdsonlab.ucsd.edu.
Candidates should have a Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M. degree, research experience in biochemistry and/or molecular biology, and a strong interest in neurological and protein misfolding diseases.
