Gates Ventures is the private office established by Bill Gates in September 2008. The group’s mission is to catalyze innovations that improve the lives of the world’s poorest people and this includes product and technology incubation, think-tank like advisory function, advocacy, marketing, and venture management.

The Health & Life Sciences (HLS) team operates four practice areas, including Alzheimer’s-disease focused investments. Gates Ventures has focused on enabling the development of low-cost, minimally invasive biomarkers, including co-funding the Diagnostics Accelerator (DxA) initiative. The DxA is a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Drug Discover Foundation (ADDF) and other philanthropic partners dedicated to accelerating the development of affordable and accessible biomarkers to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and to advance the development of more targeted therapeutics.

Through translational research awards and access to consulting support and biosamples, the program challenges the research community to develop novel fluid and digital biomarkers. In addition, Gates Ventures has several partnerships and initiatives underway to create an enabling environment for Alzheimer’s biomarker research, including biobanking and sample sharing initiatives, and data sharing and interoperability initiatives with the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative (ADDI), Sage Bionetworks, and others.

THE POSITION

Gates is looking for an individual to join the HLS team to serve as a backfill manager for Alzheimer’s diagnostics for approximately six months, starting November 2021. This individual will report to the associate director of the HLS team and will work closely with Gates Ventures’ partners, including the ADDF. The position will require the ability to manage a variety of stakeholders, effectively manage multiple scopes of work, and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. The individual will also be expected to take on a business lens to evaluate investment opportunities for the DxA initiative. Overall, this individual will provide oversight and work with the ADDF on day-to-day project management of the DxA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The individual taking on this important role will be responsible for a wide range of activities and relationships, including but not limited to:

  • Partner with the ADDF to oversee project execution, facilitate collaboration, monitor and manage progress and help inform funding decisions for the DxA
  • Work with the ADDF & GV teams, external consultants and the DxA Joint Steering Committee, shepherd proposals through the DxA review process, including scientific and business reviews of submitted proposals, conducting additional due diligence, working with applicants to refine proposals, presenting projects to the Joint Steering Committee for funding decisions, and overseeing the contracting process
  • Take on a business perspective when evaluating investment opportunities and provide a business rationale for informing investment decisions for the DxA
  • Manage the internal due diligence process by identifying high priority for-profit investment opportunities, putting the team together, defining timeline, shepherding the team through the process, and providing final recommendations to the DxA core team and the Joint Steering Committee
  • Conduct literature research, attend conferences and events with thought leaders in the Alzheimer’s diagnostics space and conduct proactive outreach to identify potential prospective applicants for the DxA
  • Develop processes and tools both internally and in collaboration with the ADDF to enable efficient program management across the initiative Manage regular check-ins between ADDF & GV, including agenda development, material preparation and scheduling
  • Contribute to planning for and the development of materials for the DxA Joint Steering Committee meetings and reports

Requirements

Advanced degree with three to five years of experience (M.B.A. preferred)

Prior experience in:

  • Management consulting / advisory services – preferred life sciences research, familiar with biomarkers, assay development and/or diagnostics – preferred startups / scaling new ventures – nice to have
  • Exceptional oral, facilitation, and written communication skills; and empathy
  • Excellent organization and project management skills
  • Excellent software skills with Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with project management tracking software (e.g. Jira)
  • Ability to learn new content quickly and identify connections
  • Comfortable with highly unstructured and ambiguous situations; ability to proactively identify solutions in such situations and execute those approaches
  • Experience in developing and managing strong partnerships and relationships inside and outside the organization, managing conflicts, and building consensus. Effective as a collaborator in complex internal & external organizations
  • Commitment to the organization’s core values, mission, and programs with an approach that is consistent with the organization’s guiding principles and holding self to the highest ethical standards
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment
  • This position can be based in the Greater Seattle Area or remote. In a pre-COVID world, this position would have required the ability to travel up to 30 percent, and given given the nature of the initiative, it will require collaborations across time zones and continents.
