The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for Health Disparities Research (CHDR) and the Betthauser Neuroimaging lab seeks a dynamic and engaged data scientist II to support a federally funded multisite project examining the impact of neighborhood disadvantage on brain health outcomes (The Neighborhoods Study: Contextual Disadvantage and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias, R01 AG070883). This position specifically will facilitate research investigating relationships between neighborhood disadvantage and positron emission tomography imaging for Aβ plaques and tau tangles collected from several different sites across the United States. The successful applicant will work with Center for Health Disparities Research and Betthauser Lab team members to intake and organize PET and MR neuroimaging data, and develop, implement, and maintain automated MR and PET neuroimaging processing pipelines. The data scientist II will also perform quality checks of these data, and assemble datasets and data summaries used for disparities, aging and dementia research. Experience with PET neuroimaging is strongly preferred, as is experience with multiple scripting languages (e.g., MATLAB, bash, Python, etc.) and experience with Unix command line and Linux operating systems. The incumbent will regularly interface with collaborative partners across the nation, the UW Center for Health Disparities Research, the School of Medicine and Public Health, and researchers across the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Job Summary: Contributes to a research agenda set by a lead researcher by preparing data sets, analyzing them using data science techniques, and presenting the results. May work independently or as part of a team.

Essential Responsibilities:

20 percent: Prepare datasets for analysis including cleaning/quality assurance, transformations, restructuring, and integration of multiple data sources.

20 percent: Independently identify and implement appropriate data science techniques to find data patterns and answer research questions chosen by the lead researcher, including data visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, and data mining.

30 percent: Organize and automate project steps for data preparation and analysis.

20 percent: Compose and assemble reproducible workflows and report to clearly articulate patterns to researchers and/or administrators.

10 percent: Document approaches to address research questions and contribute to the establishment of reproducible research methodologies and analysis workflows.


Required: Bachelor's Degree

Preferably  degree in a quantitative field, such as medical physics, biomedical engineering, computational science, etc.


  • One year of relevant work experience required.
  • Experience with computer coding and scripting languages is required.
  • Experience with command line, Linux operating systems and neuro-imaging software strongly preferred.
