Associate Specialist

Employer

University of California, Irvine, Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders

Location

Irvine, California

Principal Investigator

The University of California, Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has an opportunity for an assistant specialist in the iPS Cell Core. UCI MIND's mission is to engage in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research designed to discover the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and brain aging, characterize the transition from normal aging to Alzheimer’s disease, and develop new treatments to slow or eliminate cognitive impairment resulting from any etiology. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out independent research under the supervision of the PI. Duties will include reprogramming human fibroblasts to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), characterizing and validating the resulting iPSC clones, and differentiating iPSCs into neuronal and glial lineages.

  1. Generation, maintenance, transfection, and differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC reprogramming via Sendaivirus, feeding, passaging, freezing, transfections).
  2. Differentiation of iPSCs toward neural and glial lineages.
  3. Familiarity with basic molecular and biochemical techniques (qPCR, western blotting).
  4. Experience working in a core laboratory setting.
  5. Prior experience with Alzheimer’s disease research is a plus.

Candidates must be able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and to manage projects within a complex organization; therefore, excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are essential.
