Associate Director, Grants Programs

This position will oversee operations and manage the International Research Grant Program, including the grant staff team; manage and support the development of program requests for applications; work closely with directors to maintain the integrity of the portfolio; identify and lead opportunities to innovate funding models and expand the funding portfolio.
Responsibilities include assisting in the creation and posting of the requests for applications and/or program announcement and oversight, including applications, peer-review, funding decisions, and then post-award management. In addition, this position will assist in the evaluation of the overall International Research Grant Program, including opportunities for new programs, evaluation of the programs, and successes of the programs and the scientific advancements.
This position is based in the home office in downtown Chicago, reports to the Senior Director, Medical & Scientific Operations.
The associate director:
- Assists in drafting RFAs/PA and posting, answering inquiries.
- Provides leadership, coaching, develops talent and goals, and manages performance of Medical & Scientific Grant Department staff.
- Responds to scientific inquiries associated with Alzheimer's Association grant competition.
- Assists in the assignment of reviewers for the grant program applications.
- Provides reports on demographics of grant program, applicants, and reviewers yearly. Reads and approves yearly scientific progress reports from awarded grants.
- Identifies, develops, and manages an evaluation program to ensure that medical and scientific grant-funding strategies are successful and success can be measured yearly.
- Works with the Med-Sci Leadership/Directors to maintain and support the Alzheimer's Association contributions to the International Alzheimer's Disease Research Portfolio (IADRP) in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging at NIH.
- Provides leadership with Med Sci team for all Med Sci documents and portfolio requirements yearly.
- Works with Director, Science Initiatives to manage review process for all translated abstracts, pending grant summaries and yearly reports provided to Relationship Development.
- Supports Relationship Development with donor assistance as needed and assigned by Senior Director.
- Collaborates with Chief Science Officer, Senior Director and Directors of Med Sci to to develop leadership in regard to scientific workgroups in product delivery conferences, press releases, published papers, scientific meetings attendance, etc.
Doctoral degree in basic biology or psychology or equivalent; preference to experience in neurodegeneration research and brain health.
Five to seven years of progressive experience managing an electronic grant-funding process, including three years of managing and directing a comprehensive grants management system.
Five to seven years of progressive experience managing technical/professional staff.
Experience writing/reading/analyzing scientific publications.
Ability to translate scientific findings into applied processes.
Excellent public speaking skills and the ability to present scientific information to non-technical audiences.
Ability to communicate effectively across technical/scientific/non-scientific audiences via written presentations and using various technological resources.
Ability to manipulate relational database to produce comprehensive multisourced reports.
Knowledge of designing and managing methodological approaches that support program-evaluation systems and reporting processes.
Ability to provide leadership, developmental coaching, and operational direction as appropriate to diverse staff.
Proficiency managing complex relationships with external and internal clients, including vendors and consultants, to deliver operating system performance and scientific products.
Experience and proficiency at communication strategies inclusive of document preparation and delivery processes to diverse audiences..
Excellent writing skills.
Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekend as needed for the job.
Ability and willingness to travel up to 30 percent; may include some international travel.
