Background

Leuprolide acetate is a synthetic nonapeptide analog of naturally occurring gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It acts as an agonist at pituitary GnRH receptors, but by interrupting the normal pulsatile stimulation of the receptors it indirectly downregulates the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
