Role of Intracellular Aß42 in AD
The formation of intracellular Aß aggregates could cause direct neuritic and/or neuronal degeneration, and trigger the formation of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (see diagram below).
- Extracellular Aß deposition would occur as a consequence of these intracellular changes but this extracellular deposition might play only a minor role in the symptoms that develop in AD.
