Role of Aß42 in AD
Aß is a secreted protein that is released from a much larger amyloid ß protein precursor protein (ßAPP) through the action of proteases referred to as ß and g secretase.
- Secreted Aß is readily detected in plasma, CSF, and medium conditioned by cultured cells
- In each case, most secreted Aß is the 40 amino acid Aß1-40 (~90%), but a small component is the 42 amino acid Aß1-42 (~5-10%).
