Ladies and gentlemen, this study is about a peculiar type of senile
dementia, which occurs at a very advanced age. Neuropathologically, it is
characterizes by abundant neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) without
significant numbers of accompanying SPs.
Besides those at our institute, cases from Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of
Gerontology by Dr. Mizutani and from Brain Research Institute of Niigata
University will be presented.
This study investigated whether this type of senile dementia should be
considered a type of Alzheimer's disease not only by evaluating the
neuropathological features but also by analyzing the apolipoprotein E
allele frequency in this patient group.
