The Alzheimer Research Forum is very pleased to present this series of interviews with prominent scientific leaders and idea generators. In each interview, we ask our subject to describe his or her working hypothesis about the cause(s) of Alzheimer's disease, speculate about the molecular events that may be occurring at the earliest stages and the pathogenic events that follow, fantasize about experiments that would confirm or falsify leading theories, discuss strategies and prospects for developing effective treatments, and chart a course for the future of research in this field.

Each interview subject has agreed to extend the discussion to questions and comments submitted by readers of the Forum Interviews, so we invite—indeed, urge—you to write in! We also very much welcome suggestions for other people we should be interviwing. We hope to present a new interview every few weeks over the coming months, invite interview subjects to regularly review and update their remarks, and to use this forum to stimulate creative discussion and exchange of ideas until we are all out of a job.
