The current findings from the Frick laboratory are exciting results for those of us in the field who determined the PI3K / ERK biochemical signaling and genomic pathway induced by activating a membrane site of estrogen in the hippocampus. These findings along with earlier reports from this group constitute a strong specific link between the membrane estrogen site of action and a cognitive behavioral outcome. Further, this particular study demonstrates the critical role these membrane-associated estrogen receptors play in the cognitive phenotype in the aging female brain.
