This paper reports the same series as reported in Abraham et al. (2001), except that 12 cases who proved to have vascular dementia were dropped from the analysis. Hence, in regard to genetic associations with Alzheimer disease, Edland et al. (2003) is more relevant. The important contribution of our 2003 paper is to report genetic associations stratified by ApoE genotype. An apparently protective IDE haplotype composed of the minor alleles reported in Abraham et al. was present in an estimated 12.3 percent of E4-negative controls and 4.2 percent of E4-negative Alzheimer disease cases (P = 0.008).
