As the article mentions, recent observations that patients taking statins have a lower prevalence of AD raised question about the mechanism of action of the statins. Specifically, it is not clear whether statins might act by lowering cholesterol in the brain because many of the statins do not cross the blood brain barrier readily. This article shows that statins do indeed affect cholesterol levels in the brain, which provides support for a hypothesis that statins might be acting to reduce the risk of AD by lowering brain cholesterol levels and therebye lowering brain Ab levels.
