The University of California, Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders has an opportunity for a project scientist. The scope of the research involves characterizing neurobiological and anatomical bases of behaviors relating to cognitive and social behaviors in animal models of aging and AD.

The current project involves a multidisciplinary approach using a canine model of aging and dementia to study how dietary and lifestyle factors mediate age-related behavioral and neuronal circuitry. This is complemented by molecular studies to identify mechanisms by which physical activity and diet prevent cognitive decline. The successful candidate will be immediately responsible for designing and writing experimental protocols, analyzing all behavioral data, monitoring ongoing studies, and conducting statistical analyses and preparing manuscripts.


A Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience with a focus on behavioral testing of both higher and rodent models, canine brain anatomy and microdissection, and molecular work with protein and RNA. Also required is knowledge of exercise and diet effects on the aging brain, as shown by first-author publications, and expertise in the fields of aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Applicant must have more than 10 peer-reviewed publications, advanced writing skills, strong organizational skills, as well as mentoring skills for undergraduate research students.

Essential skills include extensive hands-on experience in all aspects of animal-related research, with an emphasis on behavioral neuroscience techniques and quantitative assessment of cognitive endpoints. The candidate should have significant knowledge of SPSS and GraphPad.

The position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
