Interview with Deborah Blacker, the Brain Behind AlzRisk
What lifestyle factors influence one’s risk of getting Alzheimer disease? For the public, the answer seems to depend on the latest study. One study exhorts the reader to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, while the next warns about metabolic disorder. Even Alzheimer’s experts find it challenging to keep track. What does the research really show over dozens of studies on tens of thousands of people? To help answer this question, Alzforum teamed up with Deborah Blacker and colleagues to launch AlzRisk. Akin to AlzGene, which catalogs genetic risk |
factors, AlzRisk aims to provide a comprehensive, unbiased, centralized, publicly available, and regularly updated collection of epidemiologic reports that evaluate environmental (i.e., non-genetic) risk and protective factors for Alzheimer disease (AD) in well-defined study cohorts.
Eligible publications are identified through contact with each cohort study supplemented by a systematic review of the literature. Meta-analyses and commentary on the relationship of the risk factor to AD as well as upon study results are also available. The database is in development and currently presents data for vitamin E supplement use and diabetes mellitus. Additional risk factors will be added in the coming year. To learn more about the history and scope of AlzRisk, read Tom Fagan’s interview with Blacker, who holds positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, Charlestown, and the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston. We welcome your feedback.
