Formal Guidelines Issued for Alzheimer’s Genetic Testing
Our Diagnosis and Genetics section provides information on the kinds of procedures to expect in a diagnosis of early-onset familial Alzheimer disease (eFAD). The disease is often missed or misdiagnosed; we will tell the story of one couple's experience. While genetic testing is becoming an increasingly important part of the diagnostic process, it is fraught with risks and implications for the entire family that need to be carefully considered. We present pros and cons of the different kinds of genetic testing available. In addition, we present profiles with people who have opted for or against predictive testing, a cautionary interview with a genetic counselor, as well as a blueprint of an appropriate genetic counseling protocol that interested candidates should expect as they consider whether to take this step.
