Name: Sabeluzole
Other Names: R58735
Development Status: investigational in U.S.
FDA Phase: Discontinued
Pharmacological Role: A benzothiazol derivative, shown to enhance memory function in animals and in normal volunteers. May slow clinical progression of Alzheimer's disease. It is thought to be a glutamate antagonist with modulatory effects on calcium channels. A more recent study proposes that it exerts neuroprotective effects by a novel mechanism of stabilizing the neuronal cytoskeleton.
Notes: Reminyl, the brand name used for sabeluzole, now refers to the drug galanthamine.
